Miami, FL - As in so many aspects of American life, access to coronavirus testing, treatment, and vaccines is an equity issue. Across the state, black people have tested positive for the virus at twice the rate of whites and the vaccination rate is equally dismal. The numbers are particularly dire in Miami-Dade County communities like Opa-Locka, for example, where 53 percent of the population is black and living in poverty and the vaccination rate is the lowest in the state.
Today, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24), House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Gregory W. Meeks (NY-5), Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-7), and Homeland Security Committee Chair Bennie G. Thompson (MS-2) sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas calling on him to end the practice of summarily expelling migrants under Title 42 of the Public Health Services Act as soon as practicable and to employ alternative forms of humanitarian relief for detainees subject to deportation for the remainder of the pandemic.
Congresswoman Frederica Wilson voted today to pass H.R. 1915, the Water Quality Protection and Job Creation Act of 2021, bipartisan legislation that would authorize $50 billion in direct infrastructure investment over the next five years to address the nation's crumbling wastewater infrastructure and local water quality challenges. The American Dream and Promise Act provides relief to our nation's Dreamers, as well as to many Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders.
