Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement today in response to the release of 21 Chibok girls after being held in captivity for 912 days by the terrorist group Boko Haram.

"I was elated to learn today that Boko Haram has released 21 of the Chibok girls who have been living in captivity for more than 900 days. According to news reports, the International Red Cross and the government of Switzerland helped to negotiate their release. In addition, it is believed that no Boko Haram terrorists were exchanged as part of the deal, which also is good news.

MIAMI - In observance of National HIV Testing Day (NHTD), Monday, June 27, 2016, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) and other elected officials will take confidential HIV tests and encourage the public to join them in taking the test. Free HIV testing will be available on Monday, June 27, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at six locations in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson today traveled to Panama for the opening of the expanded Panama Canal. With its capacity nearly tripled, the canal will be able to accommodate bigger ships carrying up to 14,000 containers of goods from China and other parts of Asia to the East Coast. The expansion also opens up new markets for U.S. businesses, such as the shipment of natural gas.

MIAMI - In observance of World AIDS Day, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) will partner with Walgreens and several health clinics throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties to offer free health screenings and HIV/AIDS testing on Thursday, December 1, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Giveaways for individuals who are tested will be provided by Walgreens.

"I applaud Haiti's citizens for finding the strength to set their struggles aside and wish them the best as they pursue the Herculean task of conducting an election in the aftermath of the hurricane. The sooner a new government is in place, the quicker Haiti will be able to recover from the various natural disasters it has faced and begin to grow and thrive."

"Under less than ideal circumstances, the citizens of Haiti on November 20 helped their nation take an important step toward governance. I applaud Haiti for achieving its goal to hold the election in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew and congratulate Jovenel Moise, the apparent winner of the presidential contest. District 24 includes one of the nation's largest Haitian communities and I look forward to working with Haiti as it continues moving forward."
