"Despite President Trump's suggestion that I have recanted my statement or misstated what he said, I stand firmly by my original account of his conversation with Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson. Moreover, this account has been confirmed by family members who also witnessed Mr. Trump's incredible lack of compassion and sensitivity.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson has introduced a bipartisan resolution to extend Temporary Protected Status to Haitian nationals until Haiti has demonstrably recovered from a series of natural and manmade disasters. The designation is set to expire in January 2018, but the island nation is still struggling to rebuild in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, a cholera epidemic, Hurricane Matthew and other adverse events. H.Con.Res. 88, which has 36 co-sponsors, would extend TPS for Haitians by 18 months.

My heart breaks for his widow, Myeshia, and the rest of his family, who upon hearing this news must have felt like they were losing him all over again.

Wilson is calling on the House Committee on Ways and Means to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

Wilson has added important language to the Disaster Recovery Reform Act. The bipartisan legislation, which has been considered and approved by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, "focuses on improving pre-disaster planning and mitigation to reduce the future loss of life and the rising costs of disasters."

"President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is troubling for a variety of reasons, but largely because of its almost immediate destabilizing effect in the Middle East. Violent clashes have erupted across the West Bank and Gaza, at least one death has been reported, and hundreds of people have been injured.

Today the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4667, an $81 billion disaster aid package. The package includes language provided by Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson to protect seniors in nursing homes during natural disasters.

"Hurricanes are as much a part of Florida's ecosystem as its coral reefs, so we must be as proactive as possible in how we prepare for these inevitable storms. Such planning will help us save lives and reduce recovery costs," the congresswoman said.
