Obama initiative to keep kids in school kicks off in Miami-Dade

Police mentor Norland middle schoolers in 5000 Role Models program

Middle schoolers at Norland Middle School were given a warm welcome by police officers who will soon become their mentors.

Program awards 81 college scholarships to Miami-Dade minority students

MIAMI (WSVN) - Almost a hundred Miami-Dade high school seniors received scholarships for college, thanks to a special program.

Monday night, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project held its prestigious annual Academic Signing Day at Jungle Island.

Eighty-one young men signed scholarships to the colleges or universities they will be attending or enrolling in.

Release of 21 Girls by Boko Haram Shows Advocacy is Never in Vain, Says Congresswoman

Long after the #BringBackOurGirls hashtag advocacy blitz was relegated to the back burner by most of Washington, Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) has been tweeting about the plight of the Chibok schoolgirls every single day.

Wilson has also held town hall meetings and participated in press conferences and hearings on the threat still posed by Boko Haram since the terror group abducted 276 girls in an attack on a secondary school in April 2014.

Today marks a dark moment in Nigeria's history. On February 24, 2014, the Islamist militant group Boko Haram killed 59 boys at the Buni Yadi secondary school in Yobe state. That same year, Boko Haram killed enough people to earn the title of the "world's deadliest terrorist group."
