On May 23, 2016, I sent a letter to Governor Rick Scott urging him to take over the city of Opa-Locka's finances. As the city's congressional representative I believe that the decision to take this step was the right thing to do.

"I am extremely pleased that the Department of Justice and the City of Miami have reached a workable compromise to implement reforms on officer-involved shootings. The settlement enables the Miami Police Department to institute much-needed changes that will save lives without creating a substantial financial burden on the city. I hope the city will also use this opportunity to hire more officers who reflect the communities they serve.

Today we commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an American hero whose voice, vision, and legacy of leadership continue to influence the course of American history. Dr. King on occasion sacrificed his freedom and ultimately his life to ensure that all Americans are treated equally, and given the opportunity to participate fully in society and realize their dreams.

Gimenez will welcome Acting U.S. Education Secretary John King, Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, and other national and local leaders at this historic event.

Today Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) sent a letter urging the Obama administration to include at least $120 million in the Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention for the Youth Mentoring Grant.
"Youth from low-resource homes or communities are more likely than their more affluent peers to come into contact with the juvenile justice system.

MIAMI - Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) announced that the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation is now accepting applications for the CBC Spouses Education Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 1998 by the spouses of Congressional Black Caucus members in response to federal cuts in spending for education programs and scholarships. Academically talented and highly motivated black students of all majors who intend to pursue full-time undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral degrees are encouraged to apply.

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement in response the release of the Department of Labor's final conflict of interest rule requiring retirement advisers to act in the best interests of their clients.

"As a representative of a majority-minority district located in what has been named one of America's top ten cities with the worst income inequality, I understand that many workers have little margin for error when it comes to their retirement savings.

Today the House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections held a hearing titled "Promoting Safe Workplaces Through Effective and Responsible Recordkeeping Standards" to examine OSHA's recordkeeping and anti-retaliation rule issued by Department of Labor on May 12, 2016.

Since January 1, 2015, OSHA has required employers to report within 24 hours any work-related amputations, in-patient hospitalizations, or loss of eye, in addition to an already existing requirement to report fatalities within eight hours.
