House Democrats today introduced the Violence Against Women Reauthorization (VAWA) Act of 2018. The original legislation, first passed in 1994, will expire on September 30, 2018.

Miami, FL - On Monday, July 2, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson met with U.S. Attorney Benjamin Greenberg, local law enforcement officials and other stakeholders to discuss gun violence and keeping children safe in District 24 and throughout Miami-Dade County. It was very timely in light of the alarming number of shootings that have occurred. In Miami Gardens alone, 10 people have been shot since June 16 and in the past decade, 300 children have lost their lives to gun violence.

MIAMI, FL - Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) and State Senator Eleanor Sobel will partner for a hurricane preparedness workshop on Thursday, May 31. Representatives from the Broward County School Board, Miami-Dade County Schools, Broward County government, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the American Red Cross, and other organizations will provide updates on emergency shelter preparedness.

In response to the news that a bid by Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties has put South Florida in the running to become the home of Amazon's HQ2, several members of Florida's congressional delegation have joined the effort to push South Florida to number one. The tri-county area is one of the top-20 finalists--chosen from among a group of 238 applicants. Winning could mean up to 50,000 high-paying jobs and $5 billion in investment in the state.

On Wednesday, May 23, the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, including Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05), Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24), and Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22) will hold a Gun Violence Prevention Forum in 2167 Rayburn House Office Building from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Miami Northwestern Senior High School and other high schools across the nation will give statements about their experiences and proposals for reform. Members of the press are invited to attend.
