MIAMI – Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson today applauded the U.S. Department of Education’s award of Federal TRIO grants to Miami-Dade and Broward Colleges.  The grants will assist low-income students, disadvantaged youth, and first-generation college students in Miami-Dade and Broward counties by strengthening the training of TRIO educators in the state.

“The Supreme Court today upheld the affirmative action program at the University of Texas at Austin, affirming the importance of diversity in higher education and ultimately the nation’s workforce. The contributions of people from different ethnic and economic backgrounds are a very big part of what makes America so great.

Washington, D.C. – Sixty-two years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that school segregation was unconstitutional. Its Brown v. Board of Education ruling underscored what people of color in communities already knew—that racially segregated, or separate, schools were definitely not equal. The ruling opened doors of opportunity for low-income, minority students that resonate to this day.

MIAMI (WSVN) — Almost a hundred Miami-Dade high school seniors received scholarships for college, thanks to a special program.

Monday night, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project held its prestigious annual Academic Signing Day at Jungle Island.

Eighty-one young men signed scholarships to the colleges or universities they will be attending or enrolling in.

Role Model Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, served as the keynote speaker at the event.
