Congresswoman Frederica Wilson issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump's declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel:

"President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is troubling for a variety of reasons, but largely because of its almost immediate destabilizing effect in the Middle East. Violent clashes have erupted across the West Bank and Gaza, at least one death has been reported, and hundreds of people have been injured.

In keeping with her pledge to do all that she can to reduce the likelihood of tragedies like the 14 deaths that occurred because of the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills' negligence from happening again, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson is calling on the House Committee on Ways and Means to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

In another initiative to prevent the kind of negligence that led to the deaths of 14 residents of the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson has added important language to the Disaster Recovery Reform Act. The bipartisan legislation, which has been considered and approved by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, "focuses on improving pre-disaster planning and mitigation to reduce the future loss of life and the rising costs of disasters."

Today the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4667, an $81 billion disaster aid package. The package includes language provided by Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson to protect seniors in nursing homes during natural disasters.

"Hurricanes are as much a part of Florida's ecosystem as its coral reefs, so we must be as proactive as possible in how we prepare for these inevitable storms. Such planning will help us save lives and reduce recovery costs," the congresswoman said.

"I should be disappointed by reports that President Trump thinks that Haiti, El Salvador and African nations are 'shithole countries' and that he has a decided preference for immigrants from countries like Norway, but I'm not. Nor am I surprised.
