Today, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24), Chair of the U.S. Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys, released the following statement following the racially motivated shooting in Jacksonville, Florida that claimed the lives of three Floridians:
"I'm filled with grief and outrage over the heartbreaking tragedy in Jacksonville, Florida. It is unconscionable that we must again mourn the loss of three innocent lives from another racially motivated mass shooting.

Miami, Fla. - Yesterday, in the wake of a hate-fueled mass shooting in Buffalo and other incidents across the country, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) voted for legislation to combat domestic terrorism and better protect our South Florida communities. The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act will expand federal resources to combat violent extremism - particularly white supremacy - and better equip local law enforcement to address these deadly threats.

Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson voted to pass H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and H.R. 1446, the Enhanced Background Checks Act, which she proudly co-sponsored. These commonsense gun violence prevention measures will require background checks on all gun sales and close the Charleston Loophole that allowed the hate crime at Mother Emanuel AME Church in 2015. In the 116th Congress, the House passed versions of these two bills in a strong, bipartisan way.

"Today we mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Although African Americans and other people of color have made great gains, it is imperative that we honor his legacy by standing up, speaking out and continuing to fight for what is right and fair.
On Wednesday, May 23, the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, including Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05), Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24), and Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22) will hold a Gun Violence Prevention Forum in 2167 Rayburn House Office Building from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Miami Northwestern Senior High School and other high schools across the nation will give statements about their experiences and proposals for reform. Members of the press are invited to attend.

Miami, FL - On Monday, July 2, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson met with U.S. Attorney Benjamin Greenberg, local law enforcement officials and other stakeholders to discuss gun violence and keeping children safe in District 24 and throughout Miami-Dade County. It was very timely in light of the alarming number of shootings that have occurred. In Miami Gardens alone, 10 people have been shot since June 16 and in the past decade, 300 children have lost their lives to gun violence.
