Miami, FL - On Monday, July 2, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson met with U.S. Attorney Benjamin Greenberg, local law enforcement officials and other stakeholders to discuss gun violence and keeping children safe in District 24 and throughout Miami-Dade County. It was very timely in light of the alarming number of shootings that have occurred. In Miami Gardens alone, 10 people have been shot since June 16 and in the past decade, 300 children have lost their lives to gun violence.

On Wednesday, May 23, the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, including Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05), Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24), and Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22) will hold a Gun Violence Prevention Forum in 2167 Rayburn House Office Building from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Miami Northwestern Senior High School and other high schools across the nation will give statements about their experiences and proposals for reform. Members of the press are invited to attend.

"Today millions of Americans awakened to the stunning news of what is now known as the largest mass shooting in recent U.S. history. This tragic event, which took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, and left more than 50 people dead and injured more than 500 others, should also be a wake-up call to U.S. House and Senate lawmakers to pass legislation to ban assault weapons, like the bill I co-sponsored in the last Congress.

"Today the U.S. House of Representatives took a step toward making our country a more dangerous place. House Republicans, in a largely party line vote, passed the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which will force every state in the nation to recognize concealed carry standards from every other state.

He was chosen to participate after surviving 11 gunshot wounds less than a year ago and was one of a select group of speakers that included parents of slain children and other survivors of gun violence.

Ten days have passed since the most horrific mass shooting in modern American history, when 49 innocent people were gunned down in in Orlando's Pulse nightclub and even more were injured, yet there has been no movement in the House to vote on measures to help curb this terrible epidemic. A majority of Americans say they support stronger gun control measures.

I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando this weekend. I am shocked and saddened by the loss of 49 innocent lives and the injuries sustained by dozens of others. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, the surviving victims for their quick recovery, and everyone touched by this senseless tragedy.
