Congresswoman Frederica Wilson’s Statement on the Passage of the ‘Big, Ugly Bill’
Today, July 3, 2025, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson issued a statement regarding the passage of Senate Amendment to the H.R. 1, the ‘Big, Ugly Bill,’ to which she voted ‘NO’:
“This is one of the most vicious, heartless, and morally bankrupt pieces of legislation I have ever seen in my time in Congress. People will die from this bill, hospitals will close, and folks will go hungry thanks to Medicaid and food assistance being cut. 17 million people will lose their health care, 5 million people will lose access to SNAP, 15.6 million children will have free and reduced lunch impacted, 1.4 million students will lose their Pell grants, and the 42 million Americans who hold federal student loan debt can expect increased payments by almost $200—all to give tax breaks to billionaires. I’m a former schoolteacher and Principal and I cannot fathom the fact that children will go hungry from this bill when they go to school without eating thanks to SNAP cuts and getting kicked off free and reduced lunch. I represent an immigrant rich community, and I cannot fathom the fact that we are also kicking millions off healthcare and food assistance programs just to throw money at ICE in order to antagonize our immigrant communities, like with Alligator Alcatraz.
“This bill is now headed to the President’s desk. I hope voters will remember this day of betrayal. The Democratic Party may not win this battle, but we will win the war. We must continue the fight and heal this nation for the sake of its people. God almighty is on our side.”
- 1,936,421 million people will lose health insurance.
- 253,000 people will lose some or all food assistance.
- 73,000 manufacturing and energy jobs would be eliminated.
- 315,294 students could have their Pell grants cut or eliminated entirely.
