Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following response to President Trump's call to end surprise medical billing: "President Trump's push to end surprise medical billing is a good thing, but it does not negate his support for a variety of Republican proposals that put at risk the health of millions of Americans and their access to affordable health insurance plans and quality care. It also does not NULLify his administration's desire to weaken protections for people with pre-existing conditions and push Americans into junk plans that do not cover essential benefits, discriminate against seniors and people with pre-existing conditions, and undermine the insurance market. "As chairwoman of Education and Labor's Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions, I held the first-ever congressional hearing on surprise medical billing and am working with stakeholders and medical billing experts to identify solutions. I hope Republicans were encouraged today to work with Democrats to end this unscrupulous practice. "If the president truly cares about Americans' health, however, he will call on GOP lawmakers to end their relentless efforts to undermine the cost, quality and access to care, and support legislation being advanced and passed in the House to lower the cost of premiums and prescription drugs and strengthen protections for people with pre-existing conditions." |
