MIAMI – Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) issued the following statement today in recognition of Black History Month:

“Each February, we recognize and honor the accomplishments of the African-American Community and celebrate its rich history. We reflect on the long road to freedom and equality, and recommitted ourselves to the fight against injustice.

This year we will also mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 – landmark anti-discrimination and equal rights legislation. But one of our most fundamental rights as Americans—the right to vote—is being threatened as a result of a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act being struck down last year by the Supreme Court. I call on Congress to repair, strengthen and broaden the protections of the Voting Rights Act.

And, as we celebrate Black History Month, let us continue to work together to fight injustice and inequality everywhere and create economic opportunities for everyone.”
