Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) voted against H.R. 1406, a Republican bill that would force working families to make an unnecessary choice between the overtime pay they rely on and the time off they need to meet family obligations. As a Member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, Congresswoman Wilson fought for workers last month by introducing an amendment to protect current law so that workers would not have to choose between overtime pay and comp time. “This Republican bill is about more work and less pay for families struggling to make ends meet,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “We cannot fix our economy by weakening hard-won protections for working people. Congress needs to focus on ensuring that working families have the income they need to pay for housing, transportation, and college tuition. When working families lose pay, our businesses lose customers. Standing up for workers is not only good ethics but also good economics.” U.S. Rep. Frederica S. Wilson is a second-term Congresswoman from Florida representing parts of Northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward counties. A former state legislator and school principal, she is the founder of the 5000 Role Models for Excellence Project, a mentoring program for young males at risk of dropping out of school. |
