Congresswoman Wilson Applauds Amazon’s Minimum Wage Announcement

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement in response to Amazon's plan to raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour.

"I was extremely pleased to learn that Amazon is raising the minimum wage it pays employees to $15 per hour and applaud CEO Jeff Bezos for putting people over profits. The move will boost the bottom line for the corporate giant's hundreds of thousands of employees, including more than 1,000 of whom live and work in my district.

"I have been at the forefront of the effort in South Florida to win the bid for Amazon's HQ2, which could bring up to 50,000 high-paying jobs and $5 billion in investment to the state. Today's announcement raises the bar for Florida-based businesses and sets an example that I urge employers around the nation and the federal government to follow.

"As founder and chair of the congressional Full Employment Caucus, I have been a longtime advocate for increasing the minimum hourly wage to $15 and have co-sponsored several bills, including the Raise the Wage Act. It is amoral that millions of people in this country toil so hard for so little in return. No one should work full-time and have to worry about how to pay the rent or put food on the table—and in the worse-case scenarios, both. Hardworking Americans deserve to earn a living wage."
