Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson Urges Governor Rick Scott to Declare a State of Financial Emergency for the City of Opa-Locka

On May 23, 2016, I sent a letter to Governor Rick Scott urging him to take over the city of Opa-Locka’s finances. As the city’s congressional representative I believe that the decision to take this step was the right thing to do.

The reality is that Opa-Locka’s financial standing isn’t the only one at stake. In situations like this, there is a Domino effect that impacts city employees, small businesses, and hard-working residents, nearly half of whom are living in poverty. If not stemmed, this crisis also could adversely affect vital city services.

As the oversight board crafts an economic recovery plan, it must also put in place measures that will not only help build a thriving community, but will also ensure that the city is not placed in a state of emergency a third time. I plan to be actively engaged in the process. The residents of Opa-Locka deserve nothing less.
