Today, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) released the following statement on the child migrant humanitarian situation: "Comprehensive immigration reform is needed now more than ever in our country. Year after year, while serving in the Florida state legislature, I sponsored the Florida DREAM Act legislation. I know the positive impact President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Executive Order has had on the lives of DREAMers across the country and in my immigrant-rich district. "The humanitarian crisis of unaccompanied children at the border is a clarion call to Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. While Republicans are trying to change current law and strip due process rights from children with legitimate refugee and asylum claims, Democrats are united in trying to fix the underlying issue by passing comprehensive immigration reform. I call on my colleagues to put themselves in the place of immigrants caught in a logjam of Republican inaction, to show some empathy, and do the right thing by passing the bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill – H.R. 15, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. "We must bring undocumented workers out of the shadows so they can pay taxes and help reduce the deficit. That's what you call deficit reduction: Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!" |
