Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) served, for the first time, as the Ranking Member in a joint hearing held by the Subcommittee on Technology and the Subcommittee on Research in the U.S. House of Representatives. The focus of the hearing was “Cyber-Security Research and Development: Challenges and Solutions.”

At today’s hearing, Congresswoman Wilson emphasized the growing threat of cyber attacks and the need to ensure robust federal funding for research to protect America’s information systems.

“Between 2006 and 2012, the number of attacks reported by federal agencies increased by 782 percent,” Congresswoman Wilson reported. “These crimes may include identity theft, intellectual property theft, service disruptions, and even espionage.”

“This is a serious issue for our businesses, our armed services, our schools, and others,” the Congresswoman continued. “We must stop cuts to research under the “sequester,” which would undercut our ability to deter, defend, and recover from cyber attacks.”

Congresswoman Wilson was elected by her colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to become the top Democrat on the Subcommittee on Technology, a part of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, for the 113th Congress.
