MIAMI, FL – Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) issued the following statement in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which runs October 1st through October 31, 2012.

“Let us continue to stand together and fight to find a cure for breast cancer. So many lives have been lost to this horrible disease. However, through early detection and advancements in medicine and treatment, many lives have been saved. Let us remember those who lost their fight with breast cancer and honor them by supporting efforts and organizations working to find a cure,” says Congresswoman Wilson.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. Breast cancer deaths, however, are decreasing probably due to finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now, there are more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
