Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) announced nearly $2 million in federal grants from the Department of Veteran Affairs to two South Florida organizations.
“As a tireless advocate for veterans and their families, I am pleased to announce these grants,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “They will strengthen efforts by organizations like the Advocate Program and Carrfour Supportive Housing to reduce homelessness among low-income veteran families – in the district and throughout Miami-Dade County – and improve access to benefits including healthcare, transportation, legal services, child care and housing counseling.” According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), veterans’ homelessness declined by 12 percent in 2011. “This is tremendous forward progress,” Congresswoman Wilson said. “I commend President Obama for his steadfast commitment to ending veterans’ homelessness, and I will continue to support him in his efforts to do right by the brave men and women who defended our country.” ### U.S. Rep. Frederica S. Wilson is a first-term Congresswoman from Florida representing parts of Northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward counties. A former state legislator and school principal, she is the founder of the 5000 Role Models for Excellence Project, a mentoring program for young males at risk of dropping out of school. |
