Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) issued the following statement after the House passed the conference agreement on the Surface Transportation Extension Act, aka the highway bill:
“The highway bill extension is good news for South Florida and the U.S. because it will create or save more than two million good-paying jobs. Additionally, this agreement will keep student loan rates from doubling for recent college graduates, something they cannot afford because they have the highest unemployment rate of any age group in the nation. And, with it being hurricane season, South Florida can be reassured that the National Flood Insurance Program will continue to be there for us if we need it.
“While this is good news, the highway bill does not increase the investment in our transportation infrastructure to the level we need in order to stay ahead of our competitors in the global economy. On this anniversary of President Eisenhower signing into law the bill that created the Interstate Highway System, I hope that my Republican colleagues will realize that they need to learn from one of their own and fully commit to rebuilding our surface transportation system so that it is once again the best in the world.”
