Today, U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson (D.-Fla.) issued the following statement on President Obama’s housing plan:
“I applaud the president on his plan to help millions of Americans keep their homes – the bedrock of the American Dream.
“These initiatives could not have come at a better time – especially for Florida, where 44 percent of mortgages are underwater and 182,000 homes were foreclosed last year. The expansion of the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) and Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) will enable millions of homeowners to refinance or modify their mortgages to reflect their economic realities.
“While the president intends to bolster the housing market’s recovery with or without Congress, I know that he’d rather work with us. I stand ready to work with him, and I urge my colleagues – including Republicans – to do the same. Reviving the housing market should not be a partisan issue. Additionally, I intend to complement the president’s efforts by fighting to pass H.R. 3595 – the Mandatory Foreclosure Mediation Act – a bill I introduced to mandate foreclosure mediation nationwide. While the challenges we face are great, a look at our history should remind us that we’re greater.”
