Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) issued the following statement after the House Republicans rejected the extension of the payroll tax cut, unemployment insurance and Medicare doc fix that Senate Democrats, Senate Republicans, President Obama and House Democrats all agreed to this past weekend:
“The House Republicans have declared a war on the holidays, putting lumps of coal in everyone’s Christmas stockings and taking away their Hanukkah gelt. We in Congress cannot in good conscience go home for the holidays until we ensure that our constituents can celebrate with their families instead of feeling like the Grinch stole all their presents.
We’ve been down this road before. What President Obama is for, the Republicans are against; and whatever the President is against, they are for. The Republicans are not looking out for the American people, but only for their own selfish interests and their stated goal of defeating the President in 2012.”
Background
By refusing to hold an up-or-down vote on the bipartisan bill the Senate passed on Saturday, the House Republicans would: • give 160 million Americans a $1,000 tax hike, • take away the unemployment benefits of 2.2 million Americans, and • take away 48 million seniors’ access to their doctors.
