Congresswoman Wilson’s Statement on the Two-Year Anniversary of the Surfside Building Collapse

Miami, Fla. – Today, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24), representing the Town of Surfsideissued a statement on the tragedy in Surfside two years ago. 

"On the anniversary of the Champlain Towers collapse, my heart is with the Surfside community as we remember the 98 people who tragically lost their. The weight of grief continues to burden the Surfside community and the families who bear the profound loss of their mothers, fathers, children, aunts, uncles, friends, and countless others. Their enduring pain serves as a constant reminder of the irreplaceable void left behind. I am proud to serve the Town of Surfside, a community that has shown remarkable strength and unity, and has faced immense challenges.

“In the aftermath of the collapse, we witnessed an incredible outpouring of support from across the world. The South Florida community, alongside countless others, will forever be grateful for this tremendous display of solidarity and compassion. We must also acknowledge the heroic efforts of the first responders who tirelessly around the clock, risking their own lives to save others. These brave men and women exemplify the best of our society, and their selfless dedication deserves our eternal gratitude.

"As we move forward, we must demand accountability, identify areas for improvement, and implement necessary changes to ensure community safety. It is our duty to apply the lessons learned and take proactive measures to prevent future catastrophes. I am committed to advocating for stronger building safety standards, comprehensive inspections, and robust oversight to protect all Americans.
