Wilson Statement on Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement in response to the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act:

"I am extremely pleased that the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act has been signed into law. This desperately needed legislation provides $8.3 billion in funding for the research and development of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics and public health funding for prevention preparedness, and response. In addition, it protects against price gouging of medicines by ensuring that the federal government will only pay a fair and reasonable price for related vaccines and drugs and gives the Department of Health and Human Services the authority to ensure that they are affordable in the commercial market. The bipartisan, bicameral package also supports small businesses impacted by the coronavirus epidemic by allowing for an estimated $7 billion in low-interest SBA loans.

"As we work to combat this virus, it is imperative that everyone take preventive action to prevent its spread. The Centers for Disease Control recommends the following steps: Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Stay home if you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue away. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a household cleaning spray or wipe. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

"The CDC does not recommend using a face mask unless you are showing symptoms of COVID-19. That is in part to ensure that masks are available for health workers and people who are caring for someone in close settings."
