Congresswoman Frederica Wilson issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump's declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel: "President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is troubling for a variety of reasons, but largely because of its almost immediate destabilizing effect in the Middle East. Violent clashes have erupted across the West Bank and Gaza, at least one death has been reported, and hundreds of people have been injured. "Like many of the dubious decisions coming out of this White House, this one was made to fulfill a campaign promise. It's a promise that's been made by both Republican and Democratic presidential candidates, who once in office wisely realized it could not be kept. President Trump, however, made this declaration despite warnings from his own advisors that it was a bad idea. World leaders also have denounced the Jerusalem declaration. "Although the move has created a significant setback, I very much hope that Israeli and Palestinian leaders will find their way back to the negotiating table and hash out the two-state solution that has for too long eluded them." |
