Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) reminds South Floridians June 1st is the start of the 2014 Hurricane Season and urges residents to be prepared.

MIAMI– Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) reminds South Floridians June 1st is the start of the 2014 Hurricane Season and urges residents to be prepared.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a near-normal or below-normal Atlantic Hurricane Season, with a 70 percent likelihood of 8 to 13 named storms, of which 3 to 6 could become hurricanes, including 1 to 2 major hurricanes.

"While fewer hurricanes are forecast for the 2014 Hurricane Season, this is not to be taken lightly. It only takes one storm to make landfall to have disastrous impacts on our community. South Florida has been very lucky over the past few years, but let's not let our guard down.

"We've seen the devastation that can be caused by hurricanes; Florida has certainly had its fair share of deadly and destructive storms, like Hurricane Andrew in 1992. So let's make sure we're prepared to take the appropriate action to protect our families and our homes.
