Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson Addresses South Florida High Schools' Brightest Technical Minds at First Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) will host the first Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, Wednesday, May 14th, at 6:00 p.m., at Miami-Dade College’s North Campus

MIAMI, FL– Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) will host the first Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, Wednesday, May 14th, at 6:00 p.m., at Miami-Dade College's North Campus.

The competition is an APP Challenge. Participating high school students, from District 24, will showcase their skills by presenting software applications they have created for mobile, tablet, or computer devices.

The competition will be judged by five highly successful professionals with years of experience in the STEM education fields: Dr. Susan Amat, founder, Venture Hive; Brian Brackeen, CEO, Kairos Incorporated; Herb Payan, senior vice president, Sony Music; Felicia Hatcher-Peterson, co-founder, Code Fever; and Kevin V. Michael, co-founder and managing partner, Invizio, LLC. The keynote speaker, Dr. Jimmie L. Davis Jr., is an engineer with the MITRE Corporation and president of STEMflorida, Inc.

The Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition was established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013 and is designed to engage students' creativity and encourage their participation in STEM education fields.

As a former school teacher, principal, Miami-Dade County School Board member, current member of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce and the U.S. House Committee on Space, Science and Technology, Congresswoman Wilson recognizes the need for innovation and creativity among our nation's future leaders.

The winning "app" will be featured on Congresswoman Wilson's website at /.

"Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education is critical. Our students must be equipped with science and technology-based skills in order to be competitive in today's job market, to strengthen our workforce and meet the demands of our changing industries. A well-educated and well-trained workforce is also essential to the economic growth our country," said Congresswoman Wilson.
