Miami, FL—Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24), announced that the City of Miramar, Florida will receive a $1.985 million grant to hire additional firefighters in order to reduce response times and ensure coverage for all residents. Congresswoman Wilson appealed directly to the Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program in a 2012 letter to secure this critical grant. SAFER provides grants to fire departments across the nation to help ensure that they have the firefighters they need to adequately protect communities.

“This federal investment will help to ensure that our local first responders have the equipment and support they need to do their crucial and courageous work,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “I am so pleased that Secretary Napolitano and the Department of Homeland Security recognized that the City of Miramar has an urgent need for this funding.”

Congresswoman Wilson is available for comment.
