MIAMI, FL – Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) issued the following statement in recognition of the 125th anniversary of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), which was founded in Tallahassee, Florida on October 3, 1887:

“I am honored to extend a congratulatory salute to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) on the 125th anniversary of its founding! As a graduate of a historically black university, an educator and advocate for the educational benefits of young minorities, I am proud to have been a part of the legacy of one of Florida’s most precious gems. FAMU continues to be a leader in education and turning out top notch students who go on to excel in their fields of study. FAMU’s rich history is the summation of more than a century of hard work and sacrifice to insure that its students are afforded the best education possible and are able to compete and excel in today’s global market,” says Congresswoman Wilson.

Florida A&M University (FAMU), was founded as the State Normal College for Colored Students, and on October 3, 1887, it began classes with fifteen students and two instructors. Today, with an enrollment of more than 12,000 students, FAMU is the premier school among historically black colleges and universities.
