Congresswoman Frederica Wilson reintroduced ‘The Jobs Now Act’ for the 119th Congress. This legislation is focused on assisting Americans who are having difficulty finding employment by providing two-year grants to cities, counties, and qualified nonprofits for training, hiring, and retaining individuals in public service jobs. “Jobs, jobs, jobs—that has always been my mantra, and while Republicans want to focus on antagonizing Americans, I’m focused on creating new opportunities for Americans. The ‘Jobs Now Act’ is another bold step towards revitalizing local economies, empowering communities, and creating meaningful opportunities for hard-working Americans in South Florida and across this nation,” Congresswoman Frederica Wilson said. “In the face of economic uncertainty, the ‘Jobs Now Act’ offers a clear vision of opportunity and innovation—one where local governments and community-based organizations have the tools and resources they need to create high-quality jobs and retain skilled workers. Our country must take every measure to relieve barriers to employment, especially when it comes to our youth.” ‘The Jobs Now Act’ proposes to distribute funds via a competitive grant process, focusing on communities experiencing significant poverty, unemployment, and home foreclosures. It aims to incentivize cities, counties, and nonprofits to prioritize the hiring of veterans, individuals with disabilities, those receiving unemployment benefits, and dislocated workers. Furthermore, in most cases, local governments and nonprofits would be required to divert 50% of their grant funds to maintain public service roles, including police officers, firefighters, and teachers, while utilizing the remaining funds to hire or train individuals for new or existing positions.
