Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24), a senior member of the Congressional Equality Caucus which promotes equality for all people regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics, released the following statement celebrating the start of Pride Month: "I extend my heartfelt wishes for a joyous Pride Month to the LGBTQI+ community in South Florida and nationwide. Regardless of your identity or whom you love, the people of District 24 offer a welcoming and loving home. "In both state legislatures and even the halls of Congress, we have witnessed a disturbing surge of anti-equality legislation that threatens our progress towards equality. As a result, I'm fighting harder than ever to end discrimination and foster an environment where individuals can live authentically and freely while pursuing complete legal equality in the United States and worldwide. "From attempts to restrict access to gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth to efforts aimed at banning transgender athletes from participating in sports corresponding with their gender identity, these laws seek to deny fundamental human rights and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Such political stunts only fuel violence, bullying, and harassment against LGBTQ+ individuals, placing our children at heightened risk of mental health challenges and contributing to alarming suicide rates. "In the face of adversity, the LGBTQI+ community has shown exceptional resilience and unwavering determination. Their fight for equality is also a fight for the soul of our nation. My unwavering resolve remains steadfast in championing the rights of our gay, bisexual, nonbinary, and trans neighbors. Every month, including this one, I proudly stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBTQI+ community as an ally and advocate committed to building a fairer and more inclusive society." ### |
