Wilson Statement on the Passing of Beloved Staff Member and Community Leader Shirlee Lafleu

Miami, FL -- Today, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (D-FL) released the below statement following the passing of her beloved staff member and community leader Shirlee Lafleur:

"I am deeply saddened by the premature passing of my cherished staff member Shirlee Lafleur. Shirlee was the quintessential congressional staffer, who for 20 years served our community with honor and distinction.

"Shirlee was the answer to everything. Whether I was wrestling with a domestic or international issue, I could always count on her advice and counsel. She always made the difference.

"Shirlee seemed omnipresent at times. One minute she was fielding concerns from seniors at an AARP meeting, and in the next she was zipping between satellite offices in Hollywood and West Park to meet with continents and resolve issues.

"Shirlee's intellect, relationships, political acumen—and her heart--enabled her to change the lives of my constituents and others across our nation and the world.

"She was a champion for teachers, seniors, workers, and the most vulnerable members of our community. We worked together to stop evictions, halt deportations, feed families, empower returning citizens, and provide a lifeline to those in need.

"After two decades of distinguished public service to our community, which began under Congressman Kendrick Meek, Shirlee has left an indelible mark on our community.

"My staff and I are devastated by Shirlee's passing and we are keeping her husband Pierre Lafleur, daughters Amanda and Samantha, and her entire family in our thoughts and prayers."
