Congresswoman Wilson Congresswoman Statement Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Washington, DC,
January 20, 2020
Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: "Every January, Americans celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who transformed our nation through his activism and commitment to racial and economic equality. Dr. King gave his life in service of a dream we continue to fight for, more than 50 years after his death--a stark reminder that despite the progress our country has made in the last five decades, much work remains to be done. "Too many Americans face lingering inequities, from access the ballot box, education, employment, and health care to how they are treated by the judicial system. Alarmingly, many of the gains that have been made since the civil rights era are under attack. "Preserving hard-won progress is daunting, but we can honor Dr. King by answering his call to affirm the dignity and worth of all Americans in whatever way possible: by marching and rallying or through everyday acts of quiet heroism. As we reflect on his life, I encourage all Americans to seek ways to carry forward his legacy in their own communities." |
