Wilson Statement on Articles of Impeachment Against Trump

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement in response to the two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump:

"I was initially one of the holdouts on impeachment, preferring instead to see the committees that have jurisdiction over this issue make a strong, defensible case that would compel the American public to endorse such a serious step. When the whistleblower came forward with information about how President Trump abused the power of his office by trying to extort information from the Ukraine government about a political rival and withheld nearly $400 million that Congress had appropriated to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia, it became clear that our only choice was to move forward on impeachment. That information was a gift that opened people's eyes and set us on the right path.

"Mr. Trump also has consistently obstructed Congress by prohibiting current and former White House officials from testifying at hearings on the Ukraine issue, which begs the question of why. If he's as innocent as he proclaims, what is he afraid they will say?

"Abusing the power of office and obstructing Congress are crimes. These actions threaten our national security and our democracy. The president's fealty to Russian President Vladimir Putin is frightening and who knows what other foreign governments he might be trying to make deals with? We cannot allow him to believe that he is above the law because if we do, there's no telling what Mr. Trump will try to do during a second term—and that's the scariest thought of all."
