Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson’s Statement on the Confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh
Washington, DC,
October 6, 2018
"The United States Senate has sent a deeply disturbing message to girls, women and families across America. With the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the highest court in the land, its members told victims of sexual assault that their voices do not matter. The FBI investigation was a nothing more than a charade that was created to give the appearance of taking the allegations against Kavanaugh seriously and to appease those who opposed him. Senate Republicans sought not the truth, but a justification, to push through the confirmation. They ignored not only the voices of tens of thousands of women across the nation, but also what they saw and heard with their own eyes and ears during the self-defense Kavanaugh delivered in which he displayed a temperament that is wholly unsuitable for a U.S. Supreme Court justice. "During his tenure, Kavanaugh will not rule in favor of women's reproductive rights, civil rights, workers' rights, environmental protections, gun violence reforms and so many other potentially life-altering issues. While I share their despair, I urge women and others who opposed this confirmation to turn their rage into votes in November. "Research has found that just 56 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in the 2016 presidential election and turnout is historically extremely low during midterm election cycles. That must change. Given the actions we have witnessed these past two years by the White House and the Republican-led House and Senate, if we don't vote and turn this nation blue, we can only expect more of the same—and perhapse worse." |
