Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson's Statement on LGBTQ Pride Month
Washington, DC,
June 5, 2018
Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement in recognition of LGBTQ Pride Month: "I am proud to join the LGBT community and its allies in District 24 in celebrating LGBTQ Pride Month. It is an opportunity to commemorate the bold activists who've moved the needle in the direction of equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The strides made in recent years toward this goal should not be taken lightly and exemplify what is possible when we unite to combat inequity and discrimination. "Last year's Pulse Night Club massacre in Orlando was a tragic example of the widespread violence faced by the LGBTQ community. I also am disturbed by Secretary Betsy DeVos's decision to roll back protections for transgender students and other Trump administration policies that have undone years of progress. These are stark reminders of the steps that we, as a society, must still take to ensure the safety and equal rights of all Americans. As a member of the Education and Workforce Committee and the LGBT Equality Caucus, I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to take meaningful steps to this end." |
