Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson Renews Push for Assault Weapons Ban
Washington, DC,
February 27, 2018
Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) became an original co-sponsor of the Assault Weapons Ban introduced today by Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01). In contrast to those who say that it is politically incorrect to push for stronger gun control measures so soon after the horrific shootings that took place last week at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the two lawmakers firmly believe that Congress cannot act swiftly enough. The legislation will prohibit the sale, transfer, production, and importation of:
"The tragedy at Douglas High School has ignited cries of anger and calls for stronger gun control measures across the nation, but I have for years been outraged and called for such measures in response to the gun violence that takes place across out nation almost every day, particularly in urban communities. I am tired of burying black boys and young men. I am tired of comforting parents, siblings and other family members after these heinous and inexplicable acts of violence," said Congresswoman Wilson. As the frequency of mass shootings has increased in recent years, assault weapons have become the weapon of choice for these murderers. Assault weapons were used in attacks on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida and the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas. Shooters have also used assault weapons to commit mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School and a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado. "I cannot think of a single justification for allowing someone who is not a member of the military or law enforcement to possess an assault weapon. There are too many damn guns in America, especially in the hands of people who don't need them," the Florida lawmaker added. |
