Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement in response to the government shutdown:

"Republican lawmakers' attempt to place the blame for the government shutting down is laughable because this is clearly a Trump Shutdown. The president would not accept any of the proposals he was offered, no matter what they entailed, because he does not know what he is doing. Republican leadership also failed the nation by even giving President Trump a choice.

"The GOP controls the House, the Senate, and the White House, but they couldn't get it together to do something as fundamental as keeping government open. Their incompetence has endangered our economy, hurt our communities, and dangerously deprived the military of the certainty our soldiers need to keep our nation safe.

"This shutdown did not have to happen. We need Republicans to show some leadership and work to find common ground to meet the needs of the American people. Democrats will continue to do our jobs and push for real action for veterans, children, Dreamers, workers, seniors, communities ravaged by opioids, and families worried about how this government closure will impact them."
