Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson’s Statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austi

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson released this statement on the Supreme Court’s 4-3 decision to uphold affirmative action at the nation’s public colleges and universities:

“The Supreme Court today upheld the affirmative action program at the University of Texas at Austin, affirming the importance of diversity in higher education and ultimately the nation’s workforce. The contributions of people from different ethnic and economic backgrounds are a very big part of what makes America so great.

“In a similar case in 2003, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor predicted that in 25 years, it would no longer be necessary to use ‘racial preference’ as a factor in college admissions. Until the effects of racial discrimination and other obstacles on the climb up ladders of opportunity that African-Americans and other people of color must overcome have been conquered, however, it is our duty to continue the fight to ensure that everyone has fair and equal access to a college education and subsequently their American dream.”
