Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson’s Statement on the Department of Justice’s Agreement with the City of Miami
Washington, DC,
February 25, 2016
“I am extremely pleased that the Department of Justice and the City of Miami have reached a workable compromise to implement reforms on officer-involved shootings. The settlement enables the Miami Police Department to institute much-needed changes that will save lives without creating a substantial financial burden on the city. I hope the city will also use this opportunity to hire more officers who reflect the communities they serve. “In 2011, after seven black men were shot and killed in seven months, I kept the community calm by letting them know that I would appeal to the Department of Justice to conduct a formal investigation. I applaud DOJ for its swift response to my request and this resolution. I stand ready to work hand in hand with Mayor Regalado and Chief Llanes to enforce the consent decree as dictated by DOJ.” Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson is a third-term Congresswoman from Florida representing parts of Northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward counties. A former state legislator and school principal, she is the founder of the 5000 Role Models for Excellence Project, a mentoring program for young males at risk of dropping out of school. Congresswoman Wilson also founded the Florida Ports Caucus, a bipartisan taskforce that coordinates federal action in support of Florida’s harbors and waterways. |
