In recognition of National Apprenticeship Week, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) introduced H.R. 3993, the Leveraging and Energizing America's Apprenticeship Program (LEAP) Act, legislation that offers tax credits to employers to help increase the number of registered apprenticeships.
"Apprenticeships are a win-win proposition for both employers and workers. These training programs help build a pipeline of highly skilled workers who, once hired, are prepared on day one to produce the quality goods and services American businesses need to remain competitive in the global marketplace," said Rep. Wilson. "The programs provide excellent opportunities for people to receive training that will prepare them for jobs in a broad range of industries and to compete for higher wages."
National Apprenticeship Week is an opportunity to educate businesses and prospective apprentices about the value of these training programs and to celebrate the lucrative opportunities they provide. According to the Labor Department, the United States boasts some 37,000 Registered Apprenticeship program sponsors through which more than a quarter million employers, industries, and companies offer training to approximately 440,000 apprentices. Workers who complete apprenticeship programs can earn more than $300,000 more over the course of their careers than their counterparts who don't.
The LEAP Act provides tax credits to employers who hire apprenticeship employees as part of Registered Apprenticeship programs recognized by their state or the Department of Labor. Employers can receive a $1,500 tax credit for an apprentice under age 25 and a $1,000 tax credit for an apprentice aged 25 or older.
