Miami, FL - Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) issued the following statement on the 50th anniversary of the launch of Head Start: "As a former Head Start teacher, I know firsthand what access to education and a hearty breakfast can do for a child. Head Start has introduced thousands of children to learning and as a result, many of them have gone on to earn college educations, start successful careers and become productive members of society. "I am proud to have been a part of Head Start. As a lifelong educator, advocate for children, and as a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, I stand with my colleagues in calling for continued funding for this vital program that has been crucial in improving the lives of countless deserving children," said Congresswoman Wilson. Head Start has served over 30 million children and their families in urban and rural areas all over the country. Head Start promotes school readiness of young children from low-income families through partnerships in their local community. In addition, Head Start programs provide children and their families health, nutrition, social, and other services vital to early childhood development. Head Start services are responsive to each child and family's ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage. ### Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson is a third-term Congresswoman from Florida representing parts of Northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward counties. A former state legislator and school principal, she is the founder of the 5000 Role Models for Excellence Project, a mentoring program for young males at risk of dropping out of school. Congresswoman Wilson also founded the Florida Ports Caucus, a bipartisan taskforce that coordinates federal action in support of Florida's harbors and waterways. |
