Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson Salutes South Florida Teachers on National Teacher Day

Miami, FL – Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) will celebrate National Teacher Day on May 5, 2015, by making a special presentation to the teachers of Brownville Middle School in Miami. The presentations will coincide with festivities planned by the school to honor the teachers. Each year Congresswoman Wilson issues a certificate for each of the more than 4,500 teachers who work at public schools in her district.

Brownsville Middle School has undergone a major culture shift due to zoning changes, and students have adopted a renewed spirit of pride following recent visits by the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project and other groups. Brownsville Middle School's exterior will also undergo a physical transformation with the painting of a mural by up-and-coming Wynwood artist Jon Louis. Jon Louis will work with at-risk students from the school to complete the project.

"As a lifelong educator, former principal, former Miami-Dade County School Board Member and a tireless advocate for children, I know and understand the enormous responsibility that our teachers have in educating our children. The role of teachers in students' lives is invaluable. I recognize their hard work and commitment and therefore I cherish any opportunity to remind them that we value their efforts. This is one of many ways I use to remind our teachers that we care," said Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson.

National Teacher Day began by proclamation of the U.S. Congress in 1980 and is now celebrated on the Tuesday of Teacher Appreciation Week, which is observed this year from May 4 – May 8. The week is promoted by the National PTA and NEA. The NEA identifies National Teacher Day as "a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives."
