Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson Calls for an End to Florida’s Standards Assessments Test in the Wake of Continued Technical Problems
Miami, FL,
April 22, 2015
Miami, FL – Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) is calling on the state of Florida to postpone tying student test scores to school grades and teacher assessment for one year, due to the failed rollout of the new high-stakes Florida Standard Assessment Test. On Monday, the server crashed, preventing students scheduled to take the computer based standardized tests from logging into the exams. Last month, computer crashes and other problems forced schools across the state to delay the tests. Congresswoman Wilson, a lifelong educator and advocate for children, who serves on the House Education and Workforce Committee, issued the following statement: "Florida must do the right thing and postpone tying student test scores to school grades and teacher assessment for one year. This year's roll out of computer-based testing had a lot of glitches. I am calling on state officials to assess how testing is administered. We must ensure that tests are fair to students, fair to teachers, and that we can administer the tests without major glitches," said Congresswoman Wilson. On April 9th, Congresswoman Wilson joined Florida State Senator Dwight Bullard, other lawmakers, educators and stakeholders in Tallahassee for a press conference calling for more relief from high-stakes testing. The Congresswoman also launched a twitter storm and asked supporters to tweet daily #DoAwayWithFSA. ### Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson is a third-term Congresswoman from Florida representing parts of Northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward counties. A former state legislator and school principal, she is the founder of the 5000 Role Models for Excellence Project, a mentoring program for young males at risk of dropping out of school. Congresswoman Wilson also founded the Florida Ports Caucus, a bipartisan taskforce that coordinates federal action in support of Florida's harbors and waterways. |
