Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson Statement on World AIDS Day
Miami, FL,
December 1, 2014
Miami, FL – Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) released the following statement in observance of World AIDS Day: "As we observe World AIDS Day and remember the devastating toll HIV/AIDS has had on our communities and honor those who've lost their lives to the disease, I urge everyone to take this opportunity to learn the facts about HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and research. According to the Florida Department of Health, ‘Miami-Dade County ranks #1 in the state of Florida for number of new HIV cases and AIDS cases and Broward County (Ft. Lauderdale) ranks #2 in the state of Florida for number of new HIV cases and AIDS cases.' These grim and frightening statistics are a call to action to recommit ourselves and resources to combating this epidemic. We must remain united and relentless in our fight to increase awareness, prevention and in finding a cure. I urge everyone to do his or her part to combat HIV/AIDS and to get tested." ### Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson is a second-term Congresswoman from Florida representing parts of Northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward counties. A former state legislator and school principal, she is the founder of the 5000 Role Models for Excellence Project, a mentoring program for young males at risk of dropping out of school. Congresswoman Wilson also founded the Florida Ports Caucus and serves as co-chair along with Congressman Bill Posey, Congresswoman Corrine Brown, and Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart. The Florida Ports Caucus is a bipartisan taskforce that coordinates federal action in support of Florida's harbors and waterways. |
