Miami, FL – Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) will host the Annual District 24 Congressional Art Competition, Art Show and Awards Ceremony, Thursday, April 24th at 5:30 p.m., at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent from congressional districts across the country. More than 650,000 U.S. high school students have participated in this competition since its inception in 1982. This year, 97 high school students from Florida's 24th Congressional District submitted artwork for the competition. The first place winner receives two airline tickets to Washington D.C. for a reception and installation ceremony on June 25, 2014, for the winners from each congressional district. The winning art piece from District 24 will be display in the Cannon Tunnel, at the U.S. Capitol, for an entire year. Scholarship money is available to the winner and other prizes will be awarded. "As a former school teacher, school board member and a current member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, I understand the importance of students getting a well rounded education. Art plays a key role in tapping into our student's creativity and allows them to express themselves in ways that result in beautiful and breathtaking artwork," said Congresswoman Wilson.
