Miami, FL – Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-FL) will host the Second Annual District 24 Congressional Art Competition, Art Show and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 5:30 p.m. at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent from Congressional districts across the country. More than 650,000 U.S. high school students have participated in this competition since its inception in 1982.

This year, 83 high school students from Florida’s 24th Congressional District submitted artwork for the competition. The first place winner will be honored in many ways, including a trip to Washington D.C. where the winning art piece will be display in the Cannon Tunnel, at the U.S. Capitol, for an entire year.

“As a former school teacher and school board member, I understand the importance of students getting a well rounded education. Art plays a key role in tapping into our student’s creative side and allows students to express themselves in ways that result in beautiful and breathtaking artwork,” said Congresswoman Wilson.
