Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.), issued the following statement after U.S. District Court Judge Robert Hinkle said he would issue a permanent injunction to stop Florida’s new law that severely hinders voter registration drives:
“This is great news for Florida’s voters. The purpose of voter registration drives is to help Americans exercise their most basic constitutional right. Anything that makes it easier for U.S. citizens to register to vote – including voter registration drives and motor-voter programs – should be encouraged. The 15th, 19th and 26th amendments ensured the right to vote to every American who is at least 18 years old regardless of race and gender. This law by the Republicans in Florida’s state legislature is a blatant attempt to suppress the vote.
“While the permanent injunction to stop this law is a victory for voting rights, we still have to make sure that we, our family and our friends who are American citizens and at least 18 years old are registered to vote. If you are eligible to vote in the November 6, 2012 general election, you can register to vote on the Florida Division of Elections website at https://election.dos.state.fl.us/voter-registration/index.shtml. The deadline is October 9, 2012. Don’t delay! Ensure your right to vote today!”
