MIAMI, FLORIDA – Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.), announced plans to award scholarships to college-bound students from within her congressional district on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 3:00 pm, at her district office at 18425 NW 2nd Avenue in Miami Gardens. Congresswoman Wilson will present the scholarships on behalf of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.
The scholarship ceremony falls two days after United Nations World Humanitarian Day, which urges people to help others in any way possible.
“Education is the key to success, unlocking doors for deserving young men and women who might not otherwise have the means and resources to go to college,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation scholarships have helped thousands of young people achieve their dreams of furthering their education. As a former school principal, I know the need for programs like this and the positive impact they can have on a student’s life.”
Each student will receive $1,600. The recipients are as listed: Jacques Wilson, who is attending Florida Memorial University; Khaleelah Ladson, who is attending Florida State University; Theresa Eugene, who is enrolled at the University of Massachusetts; Lawrence Collier, who is attending FAMU; Clara Forges, who is enrolled at the University of Miami; and Clauden Louis, who is attending Howard University.
Congresswoman Wilson is a lifelong advocate of children and education, including her founding of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, which provides mentorship and scholarships to at-risk boys in Miami-Dade Public Schools.
